Hello Everyone,

It’s that time of year again….the wonderful change of seasons. With warm=
weather here, the change of seasons also brings with it a surge in crime.

So this Spring I would like everyone to try to focus on prevention of the m=
ost commonly seen crimes….the crimes of opportunity.

Let’s take a quick look at the big three from 2010 to 2012:

Burglary (break and enter a dwelling with the intent to commit another cri=
me)

2010 – 178 2011 – 181 2012 – 203=
Increase of 12% from 2011
(these numbers include burglaries of commercial establishments, which is wh=
ere we saw our increase….residential burglaries we were pretty much even =
with 2011)

Larceny (Theft)

2010 – 1,907 2011 – 2,121 2012 – 2,07=
2 Decrease of 2% from 2011

Auto Theft

2010 – 199 2011 – 212 2012 – 194 =
Decrease of 8% from 2011

I try to use these statistics from year to year as a benchmark for where we=
are in the district as far as prevention goes. While our numbers are sligh=
tly down in 2012 from 2011 in a couple of categories, we are above our 2010=
numbers except for Auto Theft and in that case just barely below.

Opportunity Reduction
The reason I focus on these three categories is, generally, these are crime=
s of opportunity. Opportunity reduction is the citizen’s/ community’s most =
effective and efficient tool to affect the scourge of property crime in and=
around their homes and neighborhoods.

The best part is, it’s easy and doesn’t cost a dime. Creating good security=
habits such as locking your doors, car and home, and taking the extra trip=
back to the car to make sure no tempting valuables are left inside. It can=
be that simple. Other prevention/opportunity reduction examples are, leavi=
ng exterior house lights on all night long (from dusk till dawn) and making=
sure they are off during the day.

Additionally…take ownership of the fact that everyone in our community ha=
s a role to play when it comes to reducing the opportunity for crime to occ=
ur and a responsibility to be on the lookout for suspicious persons/vehicle=
s & activity. Don’t assume someone else is seeing and reporting what you ar=
e. If you are not sure what you are witnessing is suspicious, take a few se=
conds and observe….it may become clear the activity is innocuous, or the =
opposite.

Opportunity reduction is one of many facets involved in preventing crime in=
our community, but remembering to perform simple tasks mentioned above wil=
l make a bigger difference than you think.

Crime Solvers Document Shredding Event in Mount Vernon was a Super Success!=
! – Another event to come this fall!!

I have been remiss in not sending out a big Thank You to the Mount Vernon D=
istrict for the support of the document shred event to benefit Fairfax Crim=
e Solvers!!

It was a huge success and we will get a second chance to support this great=
cause, as well as unburden ourselves of paper we need shred, in the fall.

In September 2013 (exact date to be determined) we will be holding another =
document shred event, at the Mount Vernon Station, to support FFX Crime Sol=
